Phoenix Contact — Industrial Automation and Cellular Networking

Phoenix Contact is a privately held German manufacturer of industrial electrical and electronic technology, headquartered in Blomberg, North Rhine-Westphalia. Founded in 1923, the company has grown into one of the world’s leading suppliers of connection technology, electronics, and automation systems, employing more than 20,000 people across 50 international subsidiaries and generating revenues of approximately €3.4 billion.

In the connectivity space, Phoenix Contact is best known for two things: the depth of its security credentials and the ruggedness of its hardware. Their cellular routers are not positioned as general-purpose networking gear — they are engineered as long-life, outdoor-ready security gateways for industrial OT environments, certified to the IEC 62443-4-2 cybersecurity standard and built to withstand conditions that would destroy conventional equipment.

The mGuard Security Philosophy

The mGuard brand underpins the security architecture across Phoenix Contact’s router range. Rather than offering basic NAT and firewall functions, mGuard devices implement stateful inspection firewalls that actively analyse traffic patterns, hardware-accelerated VPN (supporting both IPsec and OpenVPN), and integration with the mGuard Secure Cloud — a centralised fleet management platform that allows engineers to establish encrypted tunnels into remote sites as if they were locally connected.

This approach is specifically targeted at OT remote maintenance use cases: a plant engineer in one country securely accessing a PLC in another, with no permanent open ports and full audit logging. The IEC 62443-4-2 certification means the hardware itself meets the gold standard for cybersecurity in industrial control system environments — not just the software configuration, but the physical device and its supply chain.

Cellular Product Range Overview

Phoenix Contact’s cellular range divides into two distinct families: the CELLULINK series for outdoor deployments and the TC ROUTER series for DIN-rail cabinet installations. Both families share the mGuard security architecture and support for IPsec and OpenVPN, but differ substantially in form factor, power delivery, and target use case.

CELLULINK Series — Outdoor Integrated Routers

The CELLULINK range is Phoenix Contact’s most significant recent innovation in cellular networking. Unlike traditional industrial routers that require separate housing and external antennas, CELLULINK units integrate the router electronics and antenna system into a single IP66/IP69K weatherproof housing. This eliminates coaxial cable runs between cabinet and antenna — a common source of RF signal loss and a maintenance headache on long-term field installations.

Power is delivered via passive PoE over a single RJ45 cable, meaning a CELLULINK unit can be installed on a mast or pole with just one cable from the cabinet below. The IK10 impact resistance rating makes them suitable for sites at risk of vandalism or physical interference.

M25 vs M40 mounting: The M25 designation indicates a smaller cable gland entry designed for mast brackets and pole installations. M40 models use a larger cable gland and are sized to mount directly into a cutout in a control cabinet door or enclosure panel.

Cat 1 vs Cat 4: The 2401 series (Cat 1) delivers 10 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up — sufficient for Modbus telemetry, remote PLC access, alarm signalling, and basic CCTV. The 4401 series (Cat 4) increases this to 150 Mbps down, better suited to remote HMI access, video feeds, or higher-volume data collection. Both carry dual SIM slots with automatic failover and GNSS positioning capability.

TC ROUTER Series — DIN Rail Cabinet Routers

The TC ROUTER range covers the traditional industrial cabinet router use case. These are panel-mounted units with external SMA antenna sockets, fitting on standard DIN rail inside control enclosures alongside PLCs, I/O modules, and power supplies. They carry the same mGuard firewall and VPN architecture as the CELLULINK range.

The TC ROUTER 3000 series covers the entry-level remote access case: two Ethernet ports, a pair of digital inputs for alarm triggering, one output for remote switching, and IPsec/OpenVPN for secure tunnelling. The 4000 series adds WLAN access point capability — useful when field devices such as handheld scanners or HMI tablets need to connect wirelessly in the vicinity of the cabinet. The 4202T additionally includes RS-232 and RS-485 serial interfaces for legacy device integration, important in brownfield OT environments where Modbus RTU over serial is still in use.

The TC ROUTER 5004T-5G is the flagship unit, providing 5G NR connectivity with Release 16 SA/NSA support and a four-port Ethernet switch — effectively a 5G-connected mini-switch for a remote site. The inclusion of LTE Advanced Pro fallback means the device maintains high-throughput connectivity even on sites not yet covered by 5G.

eSIM and Remote SIM Provisioning

The newer CELLULINK models are explicitly marketed as eSIM ready. In the context of industrial field deployments — where physical SIM swap requires a site visit and may involve hazardous access — remote SIM profile provisioning via eUICC is a significant operational benefit. Phoenix Contact positions this as part of their approach to long-service-life installations where the carrier landscape may change over the device’s lifetime.
